Week 60: October 8, 2018 - Power of Prayer

Dear Family,
Well, another week gone by. You all sound like you are doing well. That always makes me so happy. General Conference was incredible! The spirit is so strong when all the speakers testify. I loved watching it this week.

I've seen a lot how God is always looking out for us even in our personal lives out here on the mission. He really cares about us. My companion's last pday last monday was awesome. I hadn't planned anything, but I did pray that this last pday with him would be one of his best pdays and that he would be super happy. Everything ending up working out perfectly. The other missionaries called us the other night to do something together. We ended up changing our minds last second and all just went out to eat at a restaurant. We ended up just asking him about his mission and just making him feel special. It was awesome! We all left and went back to our areas at the end, and he asked me if I had planned all of that. I told him, "no, God did that." He didn't believe me. I told him that God was looking out for him. It was pretty neat and made me soooo happy.

It also rained like crazy this week!!! We had a huge mud waterfall in a river by our house that was just crazy!!! I had never seen rain so strong just come and go like it has here. It was raining cows and horses!!!!!
We had a neat lesson with a person we had been trying to find for forever!!!! Her name is Lígia. We taught her with her parents in her home. She has an amazing story and all the members had been telling us tons about her. She had already been going to the church for 10 years! She had done all 4 years of seminary and had even taught a few lessons! She was never baptized because she never felt she had to. She was so kind!

We asked her to pull out her scriptures; they were all super marked up. You could tell she still had a special connection to them even though she hadn't picked them up for years. We talked to her about the Book of Mormon and its purpose. She smiled down at the stack of books she had from seminary and said that she would start reading again. It was super neat. She said how she still applied in her life all the lessons that she had learned from reading the Book of Mormon. It made me think about the importance of the Book of Mormon in my life and how much it has changed me. It truly is a guide and a blessing from God.

My companion's last full day here in the Azores, we got to teach a neat lesson to this guys named Vasco. He had an amazing spiritual experience that awakened his belief in God literally 3 weeks ago. My companion and I had taught him once before. I remember before teaching, I said a prayer that God would put words into my mouth to help me to know what to say. I've been trying to pray a lot more during lessons with people, whether it be for me or for my companion while he is talking. He had a lot of great questions. I felt the spirit preach to him through me and say things I know I'm not capable of coming up with on my own. I noticed during the lesson, I was much less nervous and stressed, rather I was calm and confident.

I love that feeling that comes from the spirit. My companion and I left the lesson and talked about how it went and what we thought. We both had the same ideas and thought process. It was a super happy moment. I notice the more we focus on Christ and put Him in the center of our lives, the happier and more capable we are in everything.

Love you all soooooo much!!! Thanks for your letters and love!!! Hope you all have a great week!!!!
Love,
Elder Barton

Also, this transfer, I will be staying here in Ribeira Grande and my new companion will be Elder Ray. He is awesome and super friendly, I've already done a split with him in Almada. Super excited!!!

I like his thoughts about praying more during the lesson either for himself or his companion. Making Christ more a part of everything. That is good advice for me. Love all the pictures. Some are quite artistic. And he likes nature!😁
